Locate the enclosure on the actual property

Identify the property line and the information available to establish the proposed placement. A photograph, old fence or approximate sketch should not be treated as boundary certification. Confirm the relevant zoning or property review with the municipality and share accepted plans or written requirements with the installer.

Describe adjacent paths, driveways, walls, landscaping and any location where access must remain available. If another contractor changes paving or ground levels, identify that work before final measurements. The quote should distinguish the fence installation from grading, retaining structures, boundary surveying or unrelated construction.

Discuss the ground, posts and retained components

Show slopes and changes in level along the route, with wide views of existing posts or sections that may remain. Discuss the proposed panel layout and how it follows the accepted ground arrangement. Do not assume a product appearance establishes the appropriate post or attachment detail at every point.

For replacement work, identify old-fence removal, retained supports and any damaged or conflicting installation. Ask which post work, material, finish and installation details are included. Final layout and support decisions should be agreed before ordering, especially where adjoining work changes the finished levels.

Treat gates as separate moving assemblies

Mark every pedestrian or vehicle opening and explain how it is used. A fence end post is not automatically suitable to carry a gate. Coordinate the opening, supports and finish with the gate order, including who supplies the leaf, hinges, latch and stops.

A fence quote should identify which gate work is included rather than assuming all openings are supplied as complete systems.
