Interior Stairwell Railing with Decorative Vertical Bars
Project Overview
Interior stairwell guard and handrail fabricated with slim vertical bars and a decorative twist detail, installed on the stair flight, upper landing and lower-level overlook during a whole-house renovation.
Analysis
The open stairwell needed a guard that could be built in sections and carried up a finished stair, with bar spacing that keeps the visual weight low while closing the opening to code.
Process
Site template, shop fabrication, delivery through the finished stair, installation around the trades, and final alignment of the returns at each landing.
Outcome
A continuous guard that reads as original millwork, with the stairwell left open and bright while every opening is closed to code.

Steel posts and rails with vertical bar infill and forged twist accents, black satin finish, welded base plates and structural anchors into the framing.
Methods & Techniques
Field measurements at each landing, welded sub-assemblies built to fit the stair pitch, base plates anchored to the floor framing, and all welds dressed before finishing.
